Grades in PE

We provide the type of Physical Education program that focuses on skill development while at the same time teaching cooperation, sportsmanship, and growth mindset. As our philosophy states, we are creating lifetime healthy habits! Some children, and adults, are more physically gifted than others, just as some people show more propensity toward art or music. Yet, we want everyone to learn that physical activity is fun AND to find activities they can enjoy the rest of their lives. Years ago, you may remember, students were given a higher PE grade if they were a faster runner or could kick a ball further.  What did that do for the student that was not the best in the gym? That certainly did not promote lifetime fitness. Students at Bailey Station come to the gym to HAVE FUN & GET FIT!!!
Students are given a Conduct (behavior) grade in the BSE gym. We strive for our gym to be a place where all students love to come. We hope your child says, "NO! I can't miss today, I have PE!" By providing a wide rage of activities in a fun environment where doing your personal best is expected, we feel confident we are instilling life-long healthy habits.
If a student does not wear appropriate athletic shoes on their PE day they will be given an alternative assignment (equipment manager, peer assistant, scorekeeper, interviewer, etc.) for safety reasons. Please help your child to remember their PE day.

The Collierville Schools District Policy is used in Physical Education. Only a behavior grade is given in PE. All students in grade 1-5 begin with a “S,” and will earn an “E” if they do not get a choice slip during the nine weeks. One choice slip keeps their grade on "S" and multiple choice slips result in a "N." Kindergarten students receive either a "S" or "N" per district policy.  Students who receive choice slips in that particular nine weeks will likely earn a "N."  Students are always given an opportunity or guided to making a better decision, with or without our assistance. We strive to help students make wise decisions by communicating verbally and non-verbally with them, allowing them reflection time to think about their choices, working with the classroom teacher, or calling the parent to discuss the student’s choices.  If a student “signs the warning log” a choice slip will be written and the classroom teacher will be informed. The student should discuss the behavior with a parent and return the signed choice slip the next day.  Signing the Bailey Station Discipline Policy assures us you have also discussed Physical Education expectations with your student.

Our ultimate goal is that all students will Have Fun & Get Fit! This includes their time in the gym as well as part of their daily life!
